Mariposa Legal, Executive Director and Co-Founder, Hannah Cartwright is an immigration attorney who represents detained immigrants in removal (deportation) proceedings in immigration courts in the United States. She holds both a Masters of Social Work and a Juris Doctor from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She served as an Attorney-Advisor for the Philadelphia Immigration Court from 2013 – 2015. Since, she has been worked with multiple non-profit legal service organizations, most recently as the supervising attorney at the National Immigrant Justice Center in Chicago, Illinois. Hannah’s work at Mariposa will be dedicated to providing holistic legal representation to detained immigrants and directing Mariposa’s collaborative work with community organizations and activists working for immigrant justice, particularly in Indiana.

About Mariposa Legal:

Mariposa Legal provides comprehensive and holistic, direct legal representation to vulnerable immigrants as well as conducts community-engaged research that centers on the most vulnerable immigrants in Indiana, amplifies immigrant voices and experiences, and documents serious human rights and due process violations to promote government accountability. Initial projects include (1) providing direct legal representation of clients deemed incompetent by immigration courts through the NQRP program; (2) conducting know-your-rights presentations at Clay County Detention Center in Brazil, IN; (3) representing Indiana residents in detained removal proceedings and filing complaints regarding human rights violations they suffer in detention (4) and laying the groundwork for integrating research with clients who opt-in to do so, beginning in Autumn 2020.
